Mini golf pinball hole
The best I could come up with was that this hole was designed to evoke a sensation like you were playing pinball with your golf shot acting like the plunger. Also keep in mind, pinball was wildly different before mechanical bumpers, that is the style of pinball this reminds me of. What's up with the seven incandescent light bulbs behind a wire cage at the top of the hole? Perhaps it was a back light for a sign like in a pinball machine.
