Overgrown emergency stop switch
A faded sign indicates that this was once the emergency stop switch for the chairlift base station. Emergency is sort of a broad word in chairlift operations, but basically the emergency brake is activated any time there is even remotely a danger to riders, especially when someone falls during loading or unloading.
