US 9W: New York's smoothest un-paved highway
An amateur sign affixed to guide signs for US 9W in Piermont reads, "New York's smoothest un-paved highway." Ironically, about a day after this sign was posted, the DOT came through and patched the worst of the worst pot holes. However, with that kind of turnaround time it's unlikely that this sign was the catalyst that got the repairs done. Prior to the repairs, 9W was a veritable gauntlet of pot holes, especially in the northbound lane. The damage to the roadway seemed to be exacerbated by deep frosts in the month of March which may have caused water content trapped under and in the road to expand.
