Gravity defying concrete pad
Despite the insistence of the mall management that the mall is not sinking, the land on which the mall was built was definitely not properly stabilized before being constructed. Although the key structural elements rest on concrete caissons driven deep into the ground, the surface of the underground parking garage rests on soil, which has certainly moved over time. This concrete pad likely once supported a utility transformer. It was anchored with steel rods, but as you can see, the ground around it has settled, leaving the concrete pad floating almost a foot in the air. A sign of purely lazy construction and much structural rehabilitation to come some day.
