Padlocked storefront
Many stores had large swinging tempered glass doors with locks built into the bottom of the door frame. However many stores also had bad locks, as evidenced by the padlocks and chains holding the doors shut. Of course, padlocks are not very difficult to bypass...

Not to mention the doors are made of glass. If someone really wanted in, they'd just break it.
