Found scrawled on the back door of the dollar store, and on a nearby electric panel (seen later). After gaining a sense of my surroundings, I quietly slipped downstairs via the nearest stairwell, which put me in the corridor behind the Radio Shack and dollar store. The coast was now clear to explore with impunity once again.
