Central chiller plant piping
The late 1960's was right in the peak of the centralization craze. Unlike many modern buildings, whose roof lines would be dotted with many smaller chillers, the Nanuet Mall was built during the modern era, when the efficiencies of centralization were widely touted. Of course, centralization presented its own issues, for example, the lack of flexibility to easily downscale on low demand. It becomes prohibitively expensive to run a chiller plant this large when half the mall is empty. The chiller itself is seen to the right, I'm actually standing on its catwalk taking this shot.
