Another covered skylight
A common theme at Letchworth is windows and skylights that were covered from patients, namely in Stewart Hall where a ridiculously ugly and low drop ceiling covered a grand architecture in the roof as well as a number of skylights. But here, the skylights seem to have been blocked before the plaster ceiling was even erected. Another possibility is that this was just a hole in the roof cut by firefighters. An aerial photo would answer that question.
