Ferns form the floor of the forest
Modern ferns are one of the more common sites when hiking through the forests of New York. Ferns are hardy and tend to thrive in areas where other flowering plants could not survive. Here, their dominance is likely due to the thick canopy top of the trees in the forest which does not permit much light through.
