Roped hydraulic elevator piston
A normal hydraulic elevator consists of an underground piston, roughly as long and as deep as the elevator is expected to travel vertically. So to raise the elevator one foot, the piston needs to rise one foot. In a roped hydraulic, the piston sits above ground, but inside the hoistway. Using a series of steel ropes (as in a traction elevator) and pulleys, the piston is able to gain 2:1 traveling distance, so for every foot the piston moves, the cab moves two feet.
