Fire Operation Panel
This panel contains a key switch to enable the fire operation controls during an emergency, as well as a run/stop switch, "door open" and "door close" buttons, and a call cancel button. The call cancel button allows a firefighter to cancel an order to go to a certain floor, stopping the elevator, pending further instructions.
Although the buttons are wired in parallel to the same buttons on passenger control panel, they operate differently during fire operations.
The fire operation panel label reads:
To operate car - insert fire key and turn to "ON". Enter floor selection
To cancel floor selection - press "CALL CANCEL" button
To close door - press and hold "CLOSE" button
To open door - press and hold "OPEN" button
To hold car at floor - with doors open, turn key to "HOLD"
For emergency stop - use "STOP" switch
To automatically return to recall floor - turn key to "OFF"
Note that to open or close the door, a firefighter must press and hold the respective button with continuous pressure, until the door is completely closed or open, respectively. Interestingly, many "door close" buttons are programmed to be locked out during normal operation at either the request of the elevator's owner or according to some local building codes. However, the "door close" button is required to work in fire operation.
