Fire Operation Indicator in Phase 1
Here, an elevator is locked out in phase 1 fire operation. The elevator has been recalled to the home landing floor and is now inoperable from the passenger controls on the COP. If there were a fire alarm on the landing floor, the elevator would stop at an alternate floor. Note that on the floor indicator, there is an illuminated "exit" symbol instructing passengers to exit the elevator.
Next to that, an illuminated fireman's helmet is displayed. This indicator will be either steady, or flashing. When the indicator is steady, a smoke or heat alarm was activated on one of the landing floors, triggering phase 1 fire service. When the indicator flashes, the smoke or heat alarm was activated inside the machine room or hoistway. Thus, the flashing alarm indicates that even firefighting personnel should not use the elevator. The label on the fire operation panel reads, "when flashing, exit elevator."
