Emergency stop roller switches at top of hoistway

If an elevator were to somehow travel past the top floor, perhaps because the floor sensor malfunctioned or the signal strips were damaged, the metal frame of the cab would slide past (and contact) these roller switches. From bottom to top, the roller switches progressively slow and then finally bring it to a full stop, ensuring a safe, comfortable ride even during a malfunction. Testing these roller switches is a part of routine elevator inspection.
