Electromechanical Otis elevator controller
Relays and fuses and pancake switches, oh my! This type of machinery never ceases to impress me. Despite the extreme precision required to make modern electronics, a digital controller just doesn't look nearly as impressive. Elevator controllers are responsible for many seemingly simple but critical tasks - everything has to work in coordination - so developing a decision engine to control a 9 story elevator using only relays is quite impressive to me. Of course, this controller lacks a number of modern safety features, namely, fire service. This controller is basically useless today because it lacks even a basic fire recall mode (phase 1 fire service). One other feature to note here is the pancake selector in the lower left corner. As the cab went up and down, a perforated metal tape moved with it, turning the pancake selector. This was how the elevator measured it's position within the hoistway before optical and magnetic sensors.
