Extended roped hydraulic elevator piston
The elevator is roughly in the middle of its vertical travel here, and passes by the top of the hydraulic piston which is roughly half-way up the shaft. The piston uses a system of pulleys and steel ropes to raise or lower the car two feet for every one foot the piston moves.
